CHAPTER 7

The entire walk to the gallery had been a blur as I daydreamed about spending a lazy morning with my boyfriend. Dark clouds quickly rolled across the sky, blurring together into a sea of slate-grey that threatened to unleash rain at any moment. As the first droplet landed on the crown of my head I already had the lawyers car in my line of sight, so picked up the pace to make it indoors before the weather worsened.

“There you are,” Brenda gasped, her relief evident as she hurried past the art on the walls to place a hand on each of my shoulders. I caught her eyes checking the watch on her left wrist that was currently resting just below my right ear; admittedly it had taken me longer than thirty minutes to get here but I was making sure Pepper understood that I didn’t want any dead rats in my house while I was out.

“Here I am,” I echoed.

“That dreadful man has been taking photographs of every piece in here, making little notes and raising eyebrows at the pottery upstairs. He’s up to something!” she blurted.

“Okay, well he’s assessing the value of the estate that Marcus had—”

“He can’t have the gallery! He just can’t!” she cut me off before I could continue. Footsteps drummed against the stairs, someone was coming and they weren’t in any rush. Waiting for the feet to reach the ground floor became excruciating as Brenda tightened her grip on my collar bones. I could see that she was afraid that she was about to lose everything and the only person that could give her any indication as to her future was taking his sweet time in delivering the news.

“Hi, I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Dalton Briggs, the executor for Marcus Reeves’s will. Do you work at the gallery too?” he asked, extending a hand toward me.

“We met yesterday,” I reminded him. “My name’s Liz, I work at The Herald.”

“Ah, so you made good on your threat to call the press,” he chuckled. “No need, everything that is transpiring is completely above board.”

“Then you won’t mind me hanging around,” I smiled. I peeled Brenda’s boney hands off me, shrinking my body as I stepped backwards. “This will that you are referring to, does anyone else get to see a copy or are you the only one? Have you got a representative from the Alzheimer’s Society overseeing this given that they are the benefactors of the auctions? I think the readership of The Herald would be interested to know more about the man that is attempting to sell off a treasured landmark to the highest bidder.”

“You can write all the salacious nonsense you like, the more horrendous the better in fact. I’m sure you’re aware of how many national papers have been sued for libel and slander, so if a small-town rag tries to come after me with a defamatory article then I will be more than happy to rinse you dry in court,” he smiled.
